GREENSBORO, N.C. – The App State softball team opened the 2020 Spartan Classic with a victory, taking down Oakland, 4-3. The Mountaineers battled back from a three-run deficit to post their 10
th win of the season.
Oakland scored all three of its runs in the first inning, scoring off two ground outs and a single. The runners for Oakland reached base off two singles and a walk. App State starter
Kenzie Longanecker was able to work out of the inning with a strikeout.
The Mountaineers began the comeback in the third inning, as
Mary Pierce Barnes walked to start the inning.
Emily Parrott would then double to left center to score Barnes from first base.
The fifth would see two more runs for App State as Barnes again started the rally with a double to left center.
Keri White singled to left field to advance her to third and
Baylee Morton singled to score Barnes and White.
Both teams would remain scoreless until the top of the sixth when
Sidney Russell hit her first home run of the season to clinch the game for the Mountaineers. Longanecker and the Mountaineer defense held the Grizzlies for their final two at bats.
Longanecker (3-4) ended the game with seven strikeouts, giving up four hits and two walks. Chelsea Wiggins (1-2) received the loss in the circle for the Grizzlies, giving up 11 hits and two walks.
The Mountaineers are back in action tomorrow, taking on Oakland again at 9:30 a.m. and Dayton at Noon.
