LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior
Kendall McGowan hit a two-run homer in the third inning in a 21-4 defeat at Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (1-4) held a 4-2 advantage after scoring three runs in the top of the third, but Kentucky (3-3) responded with 10 runs in the bottom half to take a commanding 12-4 lead.
App State scored its first run in the third inning on a balk from Kentucky starter Mason Hazelwood. Senior
Luke Allison trotted home from third after reaching base to open the inning via an error.
Sophomore
Phillip Cole reached base all three times Saturday, going 2-for-2 with a double, a single, an RBI and a walk. Cole's double in the second inning knocked in junior
Andrew Greckel from second base. Greckel swiped his second bag of the season earlier in the frame.
Kentucky recorded three innings with four or more runs scored. Leadoff batter Elliot Curtis paced the Wildcats with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, knocking in three runs and hitting one of UK's three homers in the contest.
App State will close out its series in Lexington on Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior left-hander
Quinton Martinez will make his second start for the Mountaineers against Kentucky's Dillion Marsh.
"We got beat in every facet of the game today," head coach
Kermit Smith said. "We answered the call last Sunday to salvage the weekend, and we are in a position to do that again."
