GREENSBORO, N.C. — Following the Sun Belt Conference's decision to cancel all regular-season competitions through the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year, App State's suspended contest from Feb. 18 at North Carolina A&T will end in a 6-2 App State victory after eight innings. The conference's decision to cancel all regular-season competitions was made in consultation with the league's Presidents, Chancellors and Directors of Athletics to address growing concerns surrounding the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The game at N.C. A&T had been suspended with the Mountaineers leading 6-2 in the top of the ninth inning. The game was planned to be resumed and completed in Boone on March 17 before App State's regularly scheduled contest against the Aggies.
Sophomore
Cole Hooper excelled in his first-career start as a Mountaineer, allowing just four hits and one earned run in six innings to earn the victory.
App State scored first in its second-straight contest to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior
Tyler Leek opened the inning with a single before sophomore
Luke Drumheller doubled to give the Mountaineers an early 1-0 advantage. App State doubled its lead later in the inning with a bases-loaded walk.
After the Aggies cut App State's lead to 2-1, junior
Andrew Greckel extended App State's advantage back to two runs with a homer to right field. The home run was Greckel's second of the season.
App State tacked on two more runs in the fourth to increase its lead to 5-1 after RBIs from junior
Kendall McGowan and senior
Robbie Young. McGowan's sacrifice fly plated freshman
Peyton Idol before Young's single up the middle brought home Leek. Idol, who made his first start on Tuesday, recorded a pair of singles and scored two runs.
After N.C. A&T scored a run in the fifth, the Mountaineers added another run in the sixth following a single from Idol and a pair of wild pitches.
