Freshmen Make Key Plays in 2-1 Win Over FIU

Box Score

BOONE, N.C. - App State women's soccer used two second half goals to topple FIU, 2-1, on Friday evening at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

App State improves to 2-4-1 while FIU falls to 1-5 on the season. The Mountaineers are now 2-0-1 at home, outscoring their opponents 9-2 in the three matches.

The freshmen for Appalachian made pivotal plays down the stretch with Hulda Agustsdottir and Hayley Boyles scoring both goals.

After trailing 1-0 going into the second half, Boyles took the ball down the right sideline before finding Emma McGibany in the box and then tapping the assist over to Agustsdottir in the 49th minute for her first collegiate goal.

The game stayed in a 1-1 deadlock until the 80th minute when Boyles tallied the eventual game-winner from Ava Dawson to give the Apps a
2-1 lead. It's Boyles' first game-winning score of her career and the first contest with a goal and an assist.

After surrendering the FIU goal in the first half, Kerry Eagleston made several timely stops with five of her seven saves in the first half, keeping the Panthers from extending their lead.

Despite only tallying three shots on goal, the Apps took advantage of their opportunities, finishing two of their three shots.

App State will look to keep the momentum going next Friday, Sept. 20 in the Sun Belt opener against Troy at 7 p.m.
