BOONE, N.C. – Despite going down a goal 15 minutes in, App State Soccer used a game-tying goal from
Taylor Duff and a second-half brace from
Libby Bermingham to soar past Southern Miss 3-1 on Wednesday.
The Mountaineers (9-3-4, 4-2-2) dominated offensively, outshooting Southern Miss (6-6-3, 3-4-1) 13-2 while registering a season-high 17 corner kicks, the most in the Sun Belt era.
Trailing 1-0 just before halftime,
Taylor Duff leveled the score with a left-footed rocket that glanced off the bottom of the cross bar and came down over the goal line to even the score at 1-1 in the 43
rd minute.
The Mountaineers grabbed the lead in the 57
th minute of play. With the Mountaineers surging offensively,
Ellie Garrison swung her right leg and rolled a ball towards the goal and Bermingham re-directed it into the corner of the net to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead.
The duo was at it again in the 79
th minute. Garrison shook free at the top of the box and slid a perfect pass forward to Bermingham who sidestepped a defender before burying a shot inside the right post for her second two-goal game of the season.
Garrison finished with five shots and four shots on goal, while both of Bermingham's shots found the back of the net. Garrison's multi-assist effort was the second of her career, giving her 44 career points, the eighth-most in program history.
Duff,
Lucy Harrington and
Maddie Williams played all 90 minutes for the Mountaineers in front of
Hanna Skogsfors, who recorded one save en route to victory.
App State will return to action for its final road match of the season as the team faces Marshall at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+. The Herd is 7-3-5 on the season and 3-1-3 in Sun Belt play ahead of their match on Thursday at Georgia State.
