Women's Soccer Upended in Season Opener

Box Score

RADFORD, Va. - App State women's soccer fell to Radford 3-0 in the season opener on Friday evening at Cupp Stadium.

Three first-half goals on set pieces were the difference for App (0-1), who was facing the Big South Conference favorites and a team that has won 15 of its last 18 matches at home.

Minus a 14-minute span for the Highlanders where they scored all their goals, the Mountaineers stayed even with the hosts.

"Tonight we battled a very good Radford team," head coach Sarah Strickland said. "Finishing in the top 50 in the nation last season, they are definitely a solid and organized team. We did a great job 18-to-18 and played quality soccer. With us conceding three goals on set pieces, it will be a focus tomorrow to prepare for a ranked Wake Forest on Sunday."

Appalachian had its opportunities with six shots on goal, three of which came from Ava Dawson. The Mountaineers held a 6-5 shot on goal advantage and outshot Radford, 12-7.

Radford scored its first goal on an unlucky break for the Black and Gold in the 21st minute. The Highlanders scored at 22' and 35" in the first half.

App State will now turn its attention towards No. 23 Wake Forest on Sunday at 6 p.m. in Winston-Salem.
