BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State (30-19, 12-10 SBC) fell to UT-Arlington (26-25, 14-9 SBC) in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday. The Mountaineers were unable to score a run in game one falling 0-5. In game two, App State scored three runs on six hits but were outlasted by the Mavs and fell 7-3.
Game One
Sydney Holland suffered the loss in game one. Holland moves on with a 13-9 record after picking up three strikeouts and allowing only one earned run. She now has 68 strikeouts on the year with a 2.18 ERA.
The Mavs scored first in the first inning but the errors by the Mountaineers kept them in the game. UTA scored a run in the third inning and three more in the sixth to finish out game one after a Mountaineer error allowed for each of those runs to cross home plate.
While the Mountaineers were unable to get their gloves on the ball,
Ally Walters and
Haley Stewart were able to make contact and get on base for the black and gold. Both had a single to get on base but were never able to make their way around the bases.
The Mountaineers dropped game one 0-5 after being unable to put together a comeback in the final inning.
Game Two
Kenzie Longanecker made her return to the circle after having not pitched since the Louisiana series on April 12. Suffering the loss, Longanecker moves to 14-5 on the year with a 2.11 ERA.
The second game of the doubleheader went scoreless until the fourth inning. Four straight singles allowed the Mavs to drive in two runs and take the mid-game lead. Again in the fifth, four hits by UTA brought home two more runs to bring the score to 4-0.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Keri White,
Haley Stewart and
Mary Pierce Barnes all singled to drive home two runs and show signs of life for the home squad.
Matching their counterpart in the sixth inning, the Mountaineers scored a run on a White single to bring home
Maddy Bloom and the score to 5-3, within reach to split the doubleheader.
Yet, a home run and a passed ball brought home two more for the Mavs and capped the score at 7-3.
The Mountaineers look to avoid the sweep with first pitch set for 12 p.m. on Sunday. Game three will be the final home game for the Mountaineers this season as well as Senior Day for the five seniors
Haley Stewart,
Megan Walker,
Jenny Dodd,
Maddy Bloom and
Ally Walters.
