Mountaineers Drop Doubleheader to Close Out Louisiana Series

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State (27-14, 11-6 SBC) fell to Louisiana (37-4, 18-0 SBC) in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday to close out the weekend series. After starting game two of the series at noon and being delayed 6 and a half hours due to weather, the Mountaineers dropped game two 0-8 and game three 5-15, both in five innings.

Game 1

Sydney Holland suffered the loss in game two bringing her record to 8-6 on the season. Through three innings, Holland had two strikeouts and four walks.

Taylor Nichols pitched the final two innings of the game, finishing with one strikeout and two walks.

Due to inclement weather, play was suspended after two innings. Grounds crew and additional staff worked on restoring the field to playable conditions and teams resumed play at 6:30 p.m.

Louisiana scored seven runs in the top of the third inning following the break and the Mountaineers were unable to get anything going. After giving up the final run in the fifth, App State fell 8-0.

Megan Walker recorded a hit for the Mountaineers with a single in the third inning.

Game 2

The rain subsided and the fog made it's way in as game two was finally underway.

Maddie Siemer suffered the loss in the circle bringing her record to now 2-3. Leanna Whaley and Taylor Nichols each pitched an inning before Siemer re-entered to finish game three.

Siemer ended with two strikeouts and three walks in the loss.

Louisiana continued the momentum gained from game two as they scored three runs in the first and second innings, four in the third and five in the fourth.

The bats came to life for App State when Keri White lead off the bottom of the third with a double to right field. Caylie Kifer moved her to third with a single while Jenny Dodd brought her home with a single of her own.

A groundout by Haley Stewart would bring home Kifer and move Dodd to second. Allison Durrence tallied her 11th home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field to cut the Louisiana lead in half at 10-5.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, they could get nothing else going and fell in five innings by a score of 15-5.

App State heads to South Carolina to take on Presbyterian in a doubleheader on Tuesday this week. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. game two start time.
