Radford Shuts Out App State Baseball

RADFORD, Va. — Appalachian State Baseball was shut out 5-0 at Radford on Tuesday night in nonconference midweek action.

Cam Roberts threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to lead the Mountaineers' pitching staff, while Luke Drumheller and Dalton Williams led the offense with two hits apiece. Alex Leshock and Phillip Cole reached base two times apiece.

App State (10-13) returns to action Friday when it plays host to Texas State in a Sun Belt Conference home series opener.

Freshman pitcher Austin Primm made his first career start Tuesday, and Radford (11-13) scored twice in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly. The Highlanders added runs on an RBI single in the fifth inning, an RBI double in the sixth and a bunt single in the eighth.

Jason Cornatzer relieved Primm and allowed one run in 3.2 innings of relief. Jack Hartman, Roberts, Evan Mauldin and Will Herman, who got the last two outs, also pitched for App State.

With one out and a runner on second with Radford leading 2-0 in the fifth, Cole seemingly made an acrobatic catch while falling against the wall in right on a hard-hit line drive from Andrew Szamski.

After an initial signal for an out, instead of ruling that the ball dropped to the ground on a transfer, the crew reversed the call and put runners on first and third. A single in the next at-bat gave Radford a 3-0 lead.
