WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Appalachian State volleyball posted a 4-1 victory over ACC foe Wake Forest in an exhibition contest on Friday afternoon.
The two teams had agreed to play five sets prior to the match.Â
"I thought we played really well," said head coach
Matt Ginipro. "We were able to play everyone and mix up our lineups to get some different looks."
The Mountaineers captured a tight first set 25-23 and carried the momentum into the second frame, winning the set 25-19.
Wake Forest would win the third set 25-19, but the Black and Gold came right back to grab set four by a 27-25 count. Appalachian closed out the exhibition by winning the final set 19-17.
"Our freshman were phenomenal," added Ginipro. "At one point, we played them all in the fourth set and they played great together. Everything that we have worked on as a team in the preseason showed up on the court today. It was nice to see all our hard work be on display against another opponent."
Offensively,
Emma Longley posted a team-high 13 kills, while
Kara Spicer added 10 kills on a .400 hitting mark.
Melissa McMath had six kills and
Lexi Kohut and
Victoria Wilform each chipped in with five.
Becky Porter dished out 11 assists and
Jana Owens added nine. On defense,
Emma Reilly notched a team-best 27 digs, with
Sydney Farthing posting nine and Owens adding six.
Appalachian State will practice for the upcoming week before opening the 2018 season on Aug. 24 at 4:30 p.m. against The Citadel at the UNC Asheville Tournament. The Mountaineers will also take on Coppin State on Aug. 25 at 12:30 p.m. and host UNC Asheville at 6:30 p.m.
