Box Score FOLEY, Ala. - Appalachian State University women's soccer suffered a 3-0 setback to No. 5 seed South Alabama in the first round of the Sun Belt Championship Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Foley Sports Complex.
App's season concludes at 9-9-1 while South Alabama will move on to face the winner of Texas State and Troy in the next round.
The Mountaineers came out on the attack with three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of the contest, including a strike from
Jessica Easley.
Kat Greer had two shots on goal early in the period but both were saved. It was the story of the morning, as the Black and Gold couldn't capitalize on six of its 10 shots on frame.
South Alabama scored two of its goals in a five-minute span before the end of the first half. The Jags' Abi Mills and Ana Helmert would score to put USA 2-0 at the break.
USA tacked on more goal to make the score 3-0 early in the second stanza.
Maggie Hanusek and Greer both tried to cut into the deficit with their shot attempts, but Justice Stanford made saves on both shots.
Taylor Ray made the start and stopped three shots while
Lauren Burke came in for the final 21:39 to make five saves.
Despite the setback, Appalachian more than doubled its win total from 2017 en route to a 9-9-1 mark and its most Sun Belt wins since joining the league with six victories.
After being picked to finish eighth in the preseason, the Mountaineers ended up as the No. 4 seed in the tournament.
