POSTGAME QUOTES
Â
App State head coach Scott Satterfield
Â
Opening Statement:
"First of all, just have to give a lot of credit to Louisiana. They came out and played a solid football game. The last two weeks you watch them on tape and see them start clicking in all phases of their team. It takes a little bit of time to get that culture going, and Coach Napier and his staff have done a great job with that, so we knew we were going to get a great fight out of them. You have to give them a lot of credit. We did a lot of good things and some things that were not so good. There will be lots of good stuff we can teach off of this film. When you're teaching off of this kind of film and kind of game, you love for it to be a win, and that's what it was. We're setting ourselves up there at 3-0 in the league, right where we need to be in Sun Belt league play with a short week coming up. We're already gearing up for Georgia Southern, and that's on everybody's mind right now as we head toward this week. We know it's going to be very short, and we're playing in five more days. You have to put this one to bed really quickly and move forward because on Wednesday we'll be heading to Georgia. I'm proud of our guys and the way they fought and the way they continued to play and come up with enough plays to get the win."Â
Â
On the fourth-down stop in the red zone early in the fourth quarter:
"That was huge. That fourth-down stop there was absolutely enormous. We put them in a bind there with the punt. We haven't rugby-punted all year, and we tried it and just didn't hit a good ball and it went out of bounds. We had two good stops down there in the red zone. Our defense made a lot of big plays this whole season, and they continue to play well. They'll be disappointed giving up 17 points tonight, but that's a very good, very solid offense. You have to be able to stop the run, and when you do that, you open up some throwing lanes. They played well tonight against one of the better offenses in this conference."
Â
On Darrynton Evans' workload and production:
"He came in and played a really good game for us. He knew he was going to be the primary running back after Jalin, which was obviously a huge loss for us. But the backs came in and
played well. This was a game where we needed to run the football and keep the ball away from their offense and grind some drives out. We were able to do that. Darrynton had some big plays in there running the football. Zac had a couple big runs. Those are the kind of games you have to win. If you run the football and play defense, you can win a lot of games. I'm proud of Darrynton because he got his opportunity today, and that's the most carries he's had – 26 carries. He'll continue to grow as he gets more carries and more touches."
Â
On the defensive line's play:
"Our D-line really played well tonight. They got some good push and really didn't allow those linemen to work up. It's very hard with the way we angle and move our guys to create the double teams and then they can get push off the (line)backers. Our backers were free to run, and they did a great job of tackling their backs and wrapping them up around the legs. A couple of times we went high and they bounced off and kept running. They're solid backs at 227 pounds and 221 pounds. That's hard to tackle. We did a great job of going low and getting them on the ground. That creates a lot more of the long-yardage type situations, and our defense did really well on third down."
Â
Running back Darrynton Evans
"The O-line was opening it up. I'm saying, 'If it's going to be like this, we might as well just keep running it and keep running the same plays.' The coaches, they had a good beat on the defense and were making great calls, and the O-line was moving people around."
Â
Offensive lineman Noah Hannon
"It's always nice knowing if you do your job, the person behind you is going to do theirs. That's kind of our motto on offense. We're DYJ – we do our job. Especially as an offensive line, you can't really control anything else. We just try to do our best at doing our job, and we've got some special backs in the backfield."
Â
Outside linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither
"The defensive line did their part today. They played extremely hard like they always do. They cleared the way for us to play fast and read our keys and make the plays we're supposed to."
Â
Louisiana coach Billy Napier
"I've got a tremendous amount of respect for this place, the people here, the program, the history and the tradition having played against these guys, having kept up with this program.
Taylor Lamb, obviously, his dad was my position coach, quarterback coach and head coach my fifth year in college. So, I've always kept up with Taylor. Certainly, it starts with coach Jerry Moore and what he was able to establish, and now Scott's done an outstanding job. Really, they've done a good job around here in their transition from FCS to Group of Five football. I think that they are one of the better teams in our league, and I'm happy they are getting votes. I think that they are a good football team and they are well-coached. We have a tremendous amount of respect for how they play the game."
Â
Louisiana running back Trey Ragas
"I don't think we played our best ball today. The defense played great. They played the best ball they've ever played this year."
