WASHINGTON, D.C. — Appalachian State University field hockey suffered its first loss of the season to Georgetown 8-0 in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon.
The Hoyas (2-0) started off the match applying much pressure at the net and scored three goals in the first eleven minutes. Following a Appalachian penalty corner in the 20th minute, the Apps (1-1) kept much of the action on their side of the field. In a span of five minutes, Taylor Cimbalist and Meghan Smart combined to have three shots deflected by Georgetown goalkeeper Chloe Verwiel.
Georgetown would continue to press the Appalachian defense and score three more goals to bring the score to 6-0 at the end of the half.
The second half opened with a Hoya goal in the 44th minute from Helena Masiello. Then in the 55th minute, Georgetown scored its final goal of the match following a scramble in front of the net.
Cimbalist led App State with five shots, three on goal, and was followed by Smart who had two shots on goal.
Appalachian will hit the road for a set of matches in Harrisonburg, Va. on Sept. 1-2. The Mountaineers will face James Madison on Friday at 4:00 p.m. before a matchup against Lafayette at 2:00 p.m on Saturday.
