BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State volleyball lost a close match to Georgia State on Friday, Oct. 6 (21-25, 26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 22-20).
The Georgia State Panthers defeated the App State Mountaineers in five hard-fought sets.
In the first set, App State had a 6-0 run to come out ahead of the Panthers, bringing the score to 14-19 after being down 14-13.
Lexi Kohut ended the match with a kill for a 21-25 triumph.
Looking to finish the second set like the first, the Mountaineers diminished the Panther's four-point deficit to bring the score to 13-13. The rest of the set was a battle to the end until the Panthers took the victory 24-26.
The Panthers stayed ahead of the Mountaineers the entirety of the set despite efforts from
Courtney Sullivan and
Melissa McMath who helped lead the team in the third set. The Mountaineers were on fire for the fourth set, answering a 5-0 run from Georgia State with a 4-0 run to tie up the score early. The Mountaineers finished off the Panthers with the help of a 6-0 run for a victory of 22-25.
App State remained ahead in the fifth set until the Panthers brought the score to 9-9. The battle continued until Georgia State pulled ahead for a 20-22 success.
Melissa McMath and
Lexi Kohut both destroyed the game with 20 kills apiece. These two also led the team in attacks and points for the match.
App State's next match will be Sunday, Oct. 8 at 12:30 p.m. at Holmes Convocation Center against SBC opponent and long-time rival Georgia Southern.
