BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State volleyball brought high-ranked SBC opponent South Alabama to five sets on Friday, Oct. 27 before the Jaguars overcame the Mountaineers for the overall win (26-28, 25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 15-6).
App State challenged South Alabama in five hard-fought sets. The Mountaineers started the night off beating the Jaguars for the first set in extra points 26-28. A late 5-0 run thanks to a kill each from
Courtney Sullivan and
Lexi Kohut killed the Jaguar's lead and brought the Mountaineers ahead 21-22. App State finished the set with a 3-0 run to win it.
South Alabama took the second set, but App State started the third set strong with a 3-0 run with help from a kill from
Melissa McMath followed by a kill from
Kara Spicer. Errors from the Mountaineers late in the third set allowed South Alabama to take the win.
The two teams battled for points in the fourth set, but the Mountaineers pushed ahead of the Jaguars to finish out the fourth set on top.
Melissa McMath killed it in the fourth set with seven kills and a service ace to end it. The Jaguars defeated the Mountaineers in the fifth and final set 15-6.
Melissa McMath had a standout performance with eighteen kills on the night.
Ashlyn Brown had 48 assists for 28 more than the leading South Alabama player in assists.
Kara Spicer helped at the net with eight total blocks, and
Emma Reilly had 16 digs.
App State will compete against SBC opponent Troy in Boone, N.C. on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 12:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
