TROY, Ala. – Troy converted a 4th-and-6 with less than two minutes remaining to set up an 11-yard touchdown run Jordan Chunn as the Trojans rallied past Appalachian State, 28-24, in a battle of Sun Belt unbeaten on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers connected with Sidney Davis for 43 yards on fourth down as the Trojans answered a 5-yard touchdown run by App's Jalin Moore with 3:29 to play in a back-and-forth second half with the driver's seat in the Sun Belt on the line.
Troy improves to 8-1 and 5-0 in league play. App falls to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in Sun Belt play. The Mountaineers had a nine-game road winning streak in the Sun Belt snapped.
App fell behind 14-0, but rallied on a “strip six” by safety A.J. Howard. The junior ripped a completion away from Troy's Sam Letton and raced 71 yards for the Mountaineers' first score.
App would tie the game just before the half on a 32-yard run by Jalin Moore late in the first half. Moore finished with 92 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns.
Freshman Michael Rubino's career long 47-yard field goal in the third quarter gave App a 17-4 lead, but Silvers came back with a 51-yard touchdown run as Troy took the lead back at 21-17.
Troy outgained the Mountaineers, 416-336. Silvers was 21-for-35 for 229 yards and an early touchdown to Deondre Douglas. Jordan Chunn had 31 carries for 19 yards and two TDs.
App's Taylor Lamb finished 14-for-28 for 167 yards. Wide out Shaedon Meadors had a game-high six catches for 58 yards. Linebacker Eric Boggs had a game-high 10 tackles and Myquon Stout chipped in 1.5 tackles for loss.
App returns home for senior day next Saturday against UL. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
