Postgame Quotes: Appalachian State vs. Wyoming

Appalachian State

Head Coach Scott Satterfield

Opening Statement

I have a lot of respect for Wyoming and their program. You look at the film and the kids play extremely hard. They play a lot of young players. They are a little bit like we were at the beginning of the year last season. They have a good running back. It was a tough day to throw the football. We were able to run the football a little bit, but we would like to be able to put the ball in the air and throw it down the field. We weren't able to do that today. We got a big win for our program. That's a great thing no matter how you get them. Wins are tough to come by, so were going to celebrate when we do get them.

On taking advantage of Wyoming mistakes

We took advantage of some of the opportunities that they were giving us. Our defense did a good job when they got backed up a few times to hold them out of the end zone. I think that was a huge part of the game. We were able to make plays when we needed to and that was a big key to the game.

On fake field goal

Converting the fake field goal on fourth and four and getting the score on the next play was a big-time momentum getter. I didn't call it initially. Then when I saw the way they lined up, I decided we were going to fake it. Bentlee Critcher made a great play; Zach Matics made a good play down the sideline to get the first down. We worked on it this week and it worked.

On keeping focus

I think so. You have to grind out some wins. They are all not going to be the 49-0-type win.  Early in this game was a grind. Things were not smooth for us. We're usually stopping guys running the football and they were able to go down the field and we're not used to seeing that. We have to step up and make plays, keep pounding, and worry only about the next play.

PK Zach Matics

On fake field goal

Well, special teamers have a lot of time on their hands. Bentlee and I work on our pitch relationship. When it was happening, it was kind of a blur. I couldn't even see Bentlee to be honest. I don't know how he got it to me. All I knew was the ball was in my hand and I ran for the first down. You can't give me credit without giving him credit.

On 51-yard field goal

It's my longest in college. In high school, I hit a 52-yarder off a tee. I didn't hit it as clean as I wanted to, but three points is three points.

LB John Law

On defensive line

The defensive line did a great job today making sure to fit where they were supposed to be. Sometimes, we have a tendency of getting into the wrong gap. They did a good job of doing their responsibilities, and I was coming in trying to make sure I got them on the ground.

On the challenges of facing a good running back

He was a great back. He was one of the best that we have played against so far. He was a very physical runner as well as elusive. We got guys to them and got hands on him, but he kept running and fighting for extra yards. Good guy. Great competitor. He tried to run at me a few times on the sideline and I don't see that often. He didn't take the easy way out so I have a lot of respect for him.

CB Latrell Gibbs

On interception return for touchdown

We were in man. I saw the quarterback rise up. I guess he was supposed to throw the double move, but the quarterback threw the screen pass. I saw the ball, picked it off, and took it to the house.

Opening Statement

It's a disappointing loss, but App State's really got a good football team and they've improved each year. There were some bright spots out there and I thought our guys stayed in the fight. There were some young guys that had some good plays and then there were some disappointing plays. I looked up at the score and that's disappointing, but some of the things we saw today were improvements.

On whether the score represented how the game was

As I looked up [at the scoreboard], I thought 'My goodness, I thought the game would be closer than this.' I mean obviously I was watching the score as we went along. As I said, we were able to move the ball up and down the field some. I thought our defense was able to come up with some sacks. There are some young guys out there who were making some mistakes, but learning from them and we're going to build from this.

On how disappointing failed red-zone trips were to the team

Well, there's a lot of things that are disappointing and we're going to continue to work down there and continue to have a breakthrough moment. I don't know when it's going to be or what, but we're going to keep trucking.

RB Brian Hill

On the loss as a whole

We just want to win. I hate losing and always will. I know the other guys on offense hate losing and I know the 11 guys on defense hate losing. The whole team just hates losing. You can feel the energy right now, it sucks. We just need to find a way to turn it around.

On what the team has to do to turn it around

We gotta keep playing. We're going to get a break one of these games. Some of the freaking plays that's happened won't happen like the one with the kickoff return. Sometimes the ball bounces in weird ways and it's bouncing bad for us. But it's definitely going to turn around for us. It can't keep bouncing bad for us all 12 games.

LB Will Tutein

On getting into the game and settling out

It just took a little while to get the nerves away, so after I got the nerves out, it just felt like everything came back to me from what we did in practice.

On how it felt to get down early on the 91-yard interception by Gibbs

I mean it's demoralizing, but you never give up. You keep pushing until the end. Just like you saw at the end, even though we were down, I think it was 14 points, we still went for the onside and we recovered it and tried to score. We won't stop fighting, so even if we get ourselves in a deep hole, we'll dig ourselves out regardless.
