Charleston Survives Men's Basketball in Final Seconds
CHARLESTON, S.C. - A pair of Andrew Goudelock free throws with 19 seconds remaining gave College of Charleston a one-point advantage and Appalachian State University men's basketball's final shot drew iron as the Mountaineers saw their four-game winning streak end with a 73-72 setback on Wednesday night.

Appalachian (16-11, 10-5 SoCon) brought the ball up the court for the final possession and had the ball stripped out of bounds under the basket with just 4.5 seconds remaining. The squads each exhausted their remaining timeouts before ASU got the ball in to Josh Hunter near the baseline. The senior looked to Donald Sims for the final shot but was forced to take it himself.

Hunter turned towards the endline and leaned in for a bank shot, which hit the far side of the rim as time expired. The forward finished the game with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and six rebounds.

The game opened at a furious pace as both teams scored early and often before the Cougars (18-9, 13-3) opened a 14-point lead late in the first half. Six points from Nathan Healy and a pair of Sims free throws cut the deficit to 41-33 at the intermission.

Sims scored 18 points in the contest to lead ASU and added four assists and four boards.

As the second half opened, CofC regained an 11-point advantage over the first two and a half minutes before the Apps made their run. Appalachian cut the score to just one point at 58-57 with 10 minutes to play and took their first lead of the half at 65-63 on a Kellen Brand transition jumper with 4:41 on the clock.

The Cougars regained a four-point advantage with as little as 1:48 remaining before the Mountaineers powered back to take one final lead. Brand knocked down a three-pointer and followed it with a jumper in the paint to put ASU up by a point with 40 seconds remaining.

Isaac Butts then fouled Goudelock while fighting for a CofC miss with 19 ticks left. After the Cougars used a timeout to allow the guard to compose himself, he knocked down two foul shots to provide the final margin.

Goudelock scored 18 points on 6-of-23 shooting on the night. For ASU, Brand and Butts each scored 10 points and Butts added a team-high seven rebounds.

Appalachian held a 41-31 rebound advantage in the game and shot 50.9 percent from the field, but allowed 21 points off of 15 turnovers.

On CofC's Senior Night, Casaan Breeden nearly doubled his season average with 15 points and a pair of blocks. Also playing his final regular season home game at Carolina First Arena, Tony White, Jr. added three points and five assists. Jeremy Simmons led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-12 field goals.

All nine Mountaineers to see action recorded two or more rebounds in the contest. The squad converted 13 offensive boards into 19 second change points.

The Mountaineers return home on Saturday to host Tennessee Tech in the ESPNU BracketBusters event at 7 p.m.
