BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball shot a season-high 67.2 percent from the field en route to a dominating 111-83 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday night in the Holmes Center.
Both teams started the game on fire, as the Mountaineers shot 77.8 percent while the Eagles connected on 58.8 percent of field goals and 7-of-10 three-pointers before the intermission. GSU opened a 10-point lead early on at 30-20 midway through the half, before Appalachian scored 19 of the game's next 23 points to take the lead for good.
ASU (16-10, 10-4 SoCon) scored a season-best 57 first-half points but only held a three-point lead as Georgia Southern (6-20, 3-10) scored 13 points off of 10 Mountaineer turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Colby Wohlleb made the Apps pay from downtown in the opening 20 minutes with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including four threes. Donald Sims led the Mountaineers with 15 points before the break.
Sims ended the game with 30 points on 11-of-14 shooting, to go along with five rebounds and an assist.
The Mountaineers continued to stretch the lead in the second half by scoring the first five points of the half on a jumper by Sims and a three-pointer by Kellen Brand. The senior joined Sims in double figures with 17 point on 7-of-10 shooting.
Appalachian then broke open the game with 11-straight points with seven minutes remaining to build a 25-point lead.
Post players Isaac Butts and Andre Williamson accounted for 23 of the team's 54 points in the paint, as Butts made 4-of-7 field goals and all four free throw attempts for 12 points and six rebounds, while Williamson was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and sank five foul shots to go along with five boards.
The Mountaineers' strong shooting carried over to the charity stripe, where the team was 28-of-32, compared to just 12-of-21 for the visitors. Ryann Abraham scored six of his eight points from the line and led ASU with five assists.
Nathan Healy shut down Wohlleb in the second half, as GSU's top scorer scored only three points after the break to finish with 22. Antonio Hanson added 14 while Willie Powers scored 11.
The win locked up one of the top-two seeds in the North division and the accompanying first-round bye in next month's Southern Conference Tournament in Charlotte.
The Mountaineers take to the road to face College of Charleston on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
