BOONE, N.C. - The only individual national champion in Appalachian State University athletics history headlines a group of five former Mountaineers selected for induction into the Appalachian Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2006 class includes: ?€˘ Harold Alexander, a two-time consensus first-team All-American and 1991 NCAA leader in punting average; ?€˘ Mary Jayne Harrelson, a two-time NCAA 1500-meter champion and six-time all-American; ?€˘ Dr. Frank Lovrich, the winningest coach in Appalachian baseball history in terms of winning percentage; ?€˘ Alvin Parker, the sixth-leading rusher in Mountaineer football history; ?€˘ Rob Wilcher, ASU soccer's all-time assists leader. All five will be inducted during the annual Hall of Fame Breakfast, scheduled to be held on Sept. 9, prior to the 2006 football home opener versus James Madison. Appalachian's all-time punting leader with 11,963 yards (including postseason) ... also ranks first all-time in career punt attempts (280), punts downed inside the 20 yard line in a game (8), season (27) and career (95) and 50-yard punts in a game (7), season (29) and career (67) ... ranks among the top three in every statistical category for a punter in school history ... booted four of the 10 longest punts ever by a Mountaineer (78, 77, 69 and 68 yards) ... led nation with 46.7 yard punting average in 1991 ... led Appalachian in punting each of his four seasons ... a consensus first-team All-America selection in 1991 and '92 ... two-time all-Southern Conference honoree ... was drafted in the third round (67th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, making him the third-highest drafted player ever from Appalachian ... played two seasons for the Falcons and is tied for fourth in team history in career punting average (41.6 ypp) ... recorded the longest punt in Falcon history with a 75 yarder versus the Chicago Bears on Oct. 3, 1993. MARY JAYNE HARRELSON (Track & Field/Cross Country 1996-2001) ... Appalachian's first-ever NCAA Champion, winning NCAA 1,500m titles in 1999 and 2001 ... a six-time All-American ... ASU's all-time record holder in the indoor 500m, 800m and mile runs and outdoor 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m runs ... also members of the record holding indoor distance medley and 4x400m relays and outdoor 4x800m and 4x1,500m relays ... ranks second in ASU record books in 5,000m run in cross country ... was named the Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year in 1999 and 2001 ... 23-time SoCon champion ... earned 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year honors for the state of North Carolina ... finished fifth in the 1,500m finals of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials ... represented the United States in the Pan-American Games in 2003, winning a silver medal in the 1,500m ... produced second-place finishes in both the mile and the 800m at the 2002 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, running personal records in both events ... ranked fifth in the United States in the 1,500m by Track & Field News in 2003 ... served as the assistant cross country/distance coach at Virginia Tech for three seasons (2001-2004), while also training for the Olympics. DR. FRANK LOVRICH (Head Baseball Coach 1967-73) ... posted a 125-76 record in seven seasons as head coach at Appalachian ... .622 winning percentage is tops in Mountaineer baseball history and 125 victories rank second behind only Hall of Famer Jim Morris' 611 wins ... led ASU to two NAIA World Series appearances (1969 and '71) ... coached ASU to Southern Conference championship and NCAA regional bid in first season of NCAA Division I competition (1973) ... led Apps to 30-10 record in 1971, tied for the best single-season winning percentage in school history ... named 1973 SoCon Coach of the Year ... coached nine NAIA all-Americans from 1967-72 ... mentored three all-region and four all-conference performers in one SoCon season ('73) ... coached three of the six Mountaineers to go on to play in the Major Leagues (Ron Hodges, Jim O'Bradovich and Mike Ramsey). ALVIN PARKER (Football, 1980-83) ... ranks sixth in Appalachian history with 2,401 career rushing yards and third with 24 career rushing touchdowns ... led Appalachian in rushing in 1981 and '82 ... ran for 222 yards - the eighth-best single-game effort in Mountaineer history - in 28-19 win over Marshall on Nov. 12, 1983 ... is tied for fifth in ASU annals with 37 carries in 222-yard performance versus Marshall ... scored four touchdowns in 48-9 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Sept. 5, 1981, good for a tie for the third-highest scoring output in school history ... led Apps in scoring as a senior with 48 points ... named first-team all-SoCon in 1982 - the only Mountaineer to achieve first-team status that season ... went on to play professionally for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. ROB WILCHER (Men's Soccer 1982-85) ... Played in all 78 of the Mountaineers' matches from 1982-85 ... helped lead Appalachian to two Southern Conference championships (1982 and '85) ... four-time all-SoCon honoree, including first-team accolades following his sophomore, junior and senior campaigns ... still ranks first in school history with 46 career assists and 20 single-season assists in 1984 ... took 231 shots in his career, good for fourth all-time at the time of his graduation and fifth currently ... is currently the boy's and girl's soccer coach at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville ... earned girls' state Coach of the Year accolades in 1997 and boys' Coach of the Year recognition in 2002 ... named NSCAA National Coach of the Year following the 2002 boys' soccer season.
