Appalachian State University head women's basketball coach
Angel Elderkin announced the hiring of Mike Huth as the director of player development on Sept. 14, 2017.
"We are excited about the addition of Mike Huth to our women's basketball program," Elderkin stated. "Mike is a tireless worker with a genuine love for the game. His energy and commitment to our program are going to impact us in overall day-to-day operations."
Huth is entering his third season as the director of development for the Apps. He played a major role in preparing scouting reports and conducting individual workouts during the season and in the offseason in his first year. The second-year staff member also helped film practices and prepared video for film sessions.
The third-year director's ability to cut film and help coach the scout team didn't go unnoticed. Huth helped the Mountaineers nab 22 victories and claim a WBI Tournament championship for the second time in program history. He continues to help the coaching staff in conducting individual workouts.
Huth's widespread knowledge and expertise of basketball will be an asset for the Mountaineers going into the 2017-18 season. The first-year staff member will oversee player development and spearhead the Mountaineers' video operations for the program, while conducting player workouts, prepare video and scout with SportsCode for the coaches to use in preparation for upcoming games. Also, he'll assist with camps, manage the Apps' recruiting database, and coordinate alumni events.Huth will help the director of basketball operations,
Trevor Smith, with the day-to-day responsibilities that come with running the program.
"I am thrilled to be here at App State, and very thankful that Coach Elderkin has given me this opportunity to advance in my development," Huth said. "I look forward to learning from this great group of coaches and working with the team as we start our preparation for the upcoming season."
Prior to arriving at App, Huth was a volunteer manager with Akron's women's basketball team in addition to being an interim head coach at Copley High School in Ohio during the 2016-17 season. From 2014-16, Huth was a varsity assistant coach at Our Lady of the Elms High School in Akron, and during the 2014-15 campaign, was a volunteer assistant video coordinator with the Zips.
Huth got his start coaching with youth and AAU teams, as well as teaching individual lessons at the Nate Smith Basketball School in Morgantown, W.V.
Huth earned his bachelor's degree in athletic coaching education at West Virginia in 2013 and recently received his master's degree in sports science in 2016 from Akron.
