Al DeGraffenreid joined the football staff at App State in 2021 and became a quality control assistant for offense and special teams in 2023. Previously, DeGraffenreid spent two seasons as a graduate assistant for the Mountaineers. 
 
DeGraffenreid arrived in Boone after serving as a graduate assistant at North Greenville, where he assisted with the running backs. Before that, he spent two seasons with Western Carolina’s football program, working with the Catamounts as a student assistant before his graduation in 2017, then taking a role as the program's offensive quality control coach.

He moved to an on-field role in 2019 after taking a spot with WCU as the team's assistant running backs coach. DeGraffenreid’s father, the late Al "Mutt" DeGraffenreid, was a coach with WCU and is a Catamounts Hall of Famer. 
 
The Cullowhee, N.C., native earned a degree in sociology from Western.
