Biography

Career: Sixth in App State history with 86 career appearances, including eight starts … Posted an 8-13 career record with five saves and had 135 strikeouts in 151.1 innings.

2018: Made 15 appearances, including two starts, and struck out 23 batters in 18 innings. Had an 0-4 record with 25 runs (23 earned) and 25 hits allowed … Because of injuries, appeared at second base late in one game at South Alabama and had one assist … Started series finales this year against Troy and Louisiana, marking his first non-relief appearances since his freshman year ... In his second appearance of the season at UNCW, had five strikeouts and no hits allowed in two scoreless innings … Struck out the only Coastal Carolina batter he faced in his last career appearance.

2017: Appeared in a team-high 25 games out of the bullpen, posting a team-best 3.38 ERA with a team-high five saves and a 1-2 record … Had 39 strikeouts, 20 walks, 45 hits allowed and 19 runs allowed (16 earned) in 42.2 innings … Through 20 of his 25 outings, had a 1.93 ERA, and the ERA was at 1.64 through 18 outings … Allowed six earned runs and 25 hits over 33.0 innings over his first 18 outings … Pitched at least one full inning in 22 of his 25 appearances and at least two innings in 12 of his appearances … Earned saves against Gardner-Webb (4-2 win), N.C. Central (7-5 win), No. 14 Louisiana (12-4 win after taking a 7-4 lead into the ninth), Little Rock (final three innings of a 3-2 win) and Georgia Southern (7-3 win) … After App State took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning at Little Rock, Howell replaced Colin Schmid and allowed two hits with one walk over three scoreless innings. He had two strikeouts, including one with a runner on second with one out in the seventh, and also picked off a baserunner to erase a leadoff single in the eighth … In a 4-3 home victory against UNC Asheville on March 8, picked up the win by allowing one run on four hits over 2.1 innings.

2016: After a successful freshman year, Howell followed it up with a highly efficient effort in his sophomore campaign … compiled a 6-2 record, 3.83 ERA and .240 opponents’ batting average in 27 appearances and 49.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen … ERA was good for second on the team … finished tied for 10th in the Sun Belt in wins despite not making any starts … 27 appearances rank sixth in the Sun Belt … worked more than one inning in 16 of his 27 appearances … led all relievers with 37 punchouts (fourth overall) … led team in wins (6), appearances (27 – all relief), surrendered two hits or less in his first 20 appearances of the season … won five-straight decisions from March 15-April 30 … turned in an impressive 2.1 innings against Texas State (March 20), striking out five batters, allowing one earned run and just two hits in the short burst on the mound … threw two scoreless innings against then-No. 23 and eventual NCAA Tallahassee Regional participant South Alabama (April 15) … pitched a hitless 1.2 innings against eventual NCAA Division I World Series Champion Coastal Carolina, recording three strikeouts to begin his sophomore campaign … worked scoreless innings in 13 of his 27 appearances.

2015: Made 19 appearances as a true freshman, including six mid-week starts … owned a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (36 strikeouts, 18 walks), good for third on the team … recorded 24 strikeouts in 24.1 innings out of the bullpen … turned in one of his finest performances of the season in second-career start at Georgia (March 10), allowing just one run and striking out three over 4.2 innings pitched … picked up lone win by striking out seven, walking none and allowing only one unearned run over 4.2 innings pitched in a planned split start vs. High Point (March 31) … closed the season with 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings over final four appearances of the season.

High School:  Three-time all-conference honoree … Goldsboro News Player of the Year went 11-2 with a 0.92 ERA and 120 strikeouts as a senior … two-time team MVP … coached by Jason King … was also a two-time all-conference performer and co-team MVP in soccer.
