NEW ORLEANS - App State's Noah Martinson was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Martinson led the Mountaineers to an impressive second-place team finish at last Friday's Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala. His ninth-place individual finish (in a field of 302 runners) helped App State place behind only No. 4 nationally ranked Alabama and ahead of such programs as Georgia Tech, Auburn and Clemson in the 29-team field.
The Carrollton, Ga., native controlled the team pace throughout the race, finishing with a stellar 8K time of 23:57.3, a mark that was nearly 12 seconds better than the previous best for the reigning Sun Belt Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year.
Martinson will help lead the Black and Gold into their next competition when they host the Fire Tower Project on Friday, Oct. 2. The women's 6K will begin at 5:15 p.m., and the men's 8K will begin shortly after at 5:45 p.m.
