NEW ORLEANS - App State junior distance runner Katie Johnson was named to the All-Sun Belt Community Service Team, the conference announced Monday. The program aims to highlight student-athletes who demonstrate a commitment to community service.
The Weaverville native logged a total of 48 community service hours in 2025-26. Johnson volunteered with Operation Christmas Child, multiple Hunger Health and Coalition food drives, and helped provide Hurricane Helene relief through the App State Student-Athletes program.
She spent her spring semester serving as a leader for Run Your City Boone, a student-run operation in which elementary and middle school students were given the opportunity to learn running techniques, participate in games and drills, and help build a bond with the student-athletes in a safe environment. Her efforts were highlighted by organizing events, helping communicate with the community regarding each session, as well as helping oversee each event to make sure everyone had a fun and safe experience.
Johnson will next compete on Friday in the Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala., with the men's 8K beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET and the women's 5K will begin at 9:20 a.m. ET.
The All-Sun Belt Community Service Team aims to recognize one student-athlete from each SBC institution who has shown outstanding dedication to community service. Each school can nominate one student-athlete who exemplifies this quality, with emphasis on the leadership and execution of these efforts.
