BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sophomore forward
Libby Bermingham scored the go-ahead goal ten minutes into the second half and netted a second tally less than ten minutes later to propel App State Soccer to a 3-1 win at Campbell on Sunday for the team's first victory of the season.
With the score tied 1-1 in the 55
th minute,
Maddie Williams set up to take a free kick from just beyond midfield. She delivered a high ball into the box and Bermingham flicked a header just under the crossbar to give App State (1-1-0) the 2-1 lead.
After a scoreless first half, the Mountaineers struck first in the 48
th minute of play.
Sofia Goclowski took a corner kick from the far side, sending the ball towards the penalty spot.
Lucy Harrington volleyed the cross on target, and while her initial effort was saved, the rebound popped free to
Reagan Sturgill who tapped home the game's first goal.
After Campbell (1-1-0) equalized in the 54
th minute, Bermingham scored just 33 seconds later to regain the advantage. She netted her second goal of the match in the 64
th minute, doing so with a flick of the head once again. This time it came off a pinpoint cross from
Hayden Petrick from the left wing.
App State finished the match with 16 shots and 6 shots on target, led by five shots (three on goal) from Bermingham. Her brace was the first by a Mountaineer since
Izzi Wood scored two goals at Longwood last September.
Hanna Skogsfors matched her career high with six saves including five in a scoreless opening half of play.
Anaya Jones made her first start as a Mountaineer and played all 90 minutes as did fellow defenders Harrington and Williams.
The Mountaineers return home to face Western Carolina on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Catamounts are 1-1 on the season, following a loss at home to UNCW on Sunday. Thursday's match will feature a vuvuzela giveaway to the first 150 fans in attendance.
