BOONE, N.C. — The App State tennis team fell 4-3 to VCU on Thursday in a tightly contested match.
It marked the fourth time this season the outcome of a match came down to the final set of singles play with the score tied 3-3.
How It Happened
App State (5-7) began the day by clinching the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 for the second time in two matches. The freshman duo of
Sreenidhi Balaji and
Allegra Hodson clinched the point, earning their fifth consecutive victory at No. 3. The pair now move to 5-2 on the season, having won their last five matches together.
Two singles losses briefly put App State in a 2-1 hole before No. 8
Savannah Dada-Mascoll earned a straight-set victory to secure the Mountaineers' first singles win of the day. It was the 10th straight win for the Yorkshire, England, native, who moved to 10-1 on the season.
After a loss at No. 2 put VCU (7-5) one singles victory away from the match win, Balaji tied the score at 3-3 with a victory at No. 6. Balaji moved to 4-2 on the season, having won her last three matches, and is currently a perfect 4-0 from the No. 6 position.
The final result came down to
Taya Powell on Court 3. Despite rallying in the first set by winning four straight games, Powell ultimately fell 6-2 in the third set to seal the win for VCU.

The Mountaineers travel to Florida to face Lipscomb on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a matchup against North Florida on March 15 at 10 a.m.
