AMHERST, Mass. — The App State field hockey team fell 5-0 in a top-five national matchup against No. 5 UMass on Friday afternoon.
How it Happened
1st: The Minutewomen (12-1, 5-0 MAC) scored twice in the opening period, netting their first goal less than five minutes into the match. Two of UMass' three first-half penalty corners came in the opening frame, with senior goalkeeper
Dakota Anderson turning away two shots.
2nd: The Mountaineers (6-6, 2-3 MAC) elevated their intensity in the second quarter, putting three shots on target while limiting the Minutewomen to just one. Despite putting more shots on goal than UMass in the frame, App State was unable to convert its chances and went into the halftime break trailing 2-0.
3rd: UMass extended its advantage in the third period, scoring its third goal of the contest despite being held to just three total shots. The Mountaineers were unable to generate a shot in the frame, trailing 3-0 entering the final quarter.
4th: The Minutewomen maintained offensive pressure in the closing frame, scoring two goals to finalize the 5-0 decision.
