BOONE, N.C. — App State Football is adding another chapter to its rivalry series with East Carolina, and this time they're going back to Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation, App State and ECU announced Tuesday that the Mountaineers and Pirates will meet again in Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2029.
"We're excited to add another matchup with ECU and to engage with App Nation again in Charlotte," App State Director of Athletics
Doug Gillin said. "The Charlotte area represents a major home base for App State alumni and fans. Games against in-state rivals are great for the fan bases and teams while providing a significant economic impact within the state of North Carolina."
App State's first FBS showdown with East Carolina was a 33-19 victory in 2021 at Bank of America Stadium, home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers. That was officially an App State home game, and the Mountaineers won 43-28 against the Pirates at Kidd Brewer Stadium in 2023.
The final two games of that four-game agreement were played in Greenville, with App State prevailing 21-19 in 2024 and 27-24 earlier this season.
"We're thrilled to welcome East Carolina and App State back to Charlotte in 2029," said Will Pitts, CEO of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. "When they come together in the Queen City, the energy is electric. This game is a celebration of North Carolina college football, and we can't wait to see both sides fill Bank of America Stadium."
Originally announced in 2017, the 2021 series opener was a Thursday night game that drew a crowd of 36,752 in Charlotte, and each of the next three meetings included crowds of more than 40,000 fans.
App State holds an overall lead of 23-12 in the series, which dates back to 1932. They squared off six times in the 1930s, all 10 years in the 1950s and eight times in the 1970s.
Currently, App State's 2029 schedule includes the Sept. 1 game against ECU, a Sept. 8 game at South Carolina and a Sept. 15 game at Charlotte.
