BURLINGTON, N.C. — Led by fourth-place finisher
Brody Tidwell, who set program records with a 13-under total of 65-69-66—200, App State Men's Golf placed fifth among 17 teams at the Elon Phoenix Invitational that concluded Tuesday.
Playing on a par-71 layout at Alamance Country Club, Tidwell broke App State records for the lowest 54-hole totals, both in total strokes and score relative to par. Addison Beam posted an 11-under 202 at the same event in 2023, tying the program's previous 54-hole record that Sverrir Haraldsson had established on a par-71 layout during the 2022 Bash at Beach tournament.
Campbell won the team race Tuesday at 32 under, and App State's 16-under total of 277-274-285—836 under the direction of second-year head coach
John Michael Cole edged three teams that tied for sixth at 15 under. Fourth-place Presbyterian finished one stroke ahead of App State at 17 under.
The Mountaineers' 16-under total tied for the third-best 54-hole team score in program history, and the stroke total of 836 over 54 holes ranks third in program history. A week ago, they finished with a 14-under total at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational despite playing without an under-the-weather Tidwell, who was pulled out of the lineup right before the start of the opening round.
The four Mountaineers who contributed to the team score Tuesday played the 17th and 18th holes at a combined 9 under to help App State make a late surge.
Tidwell, who had six birdies in a bogey-free round to begin the tournament, was 7 under for the event heading to the back nine Tuesday. He shot a 6-under 30 on his final nine holes —with five birdies, one eagle (on No. 17) and one bogey — and has three top-20 finishes in three fall starts. Wake Forest's Tom Haberer won the event with a 17-under total of 66-62-68—196.
App State's
James Marriott tied for 30th overall with a 2-under total of 70-69-72—211, and
Matthew McDougall tied for 44th at even (72-69-72—213).
Rob Bergevin stood at 5 under through 36 holes before finishing in a tie for 74th at 4 over (70-67-80—217), and
Wyatt Beaver tied for 78th at 5 over (76-69-73—218) while competing as an individual.
Caden Lee tied for 95th at 12 over (74-76-75—225).
App State wraps up its fall schedule next week at the Quebin Cup hosted by High Point at Sedgefield Country Club.
