SAN MARCOS, Texas – The App State women's basketball team fell short to Texas State, 63-49, on the road on Wednesday.
For a sixth game this season, senior
Emma Smith was the Mountaineers' top scorer, netting 14 points. It was also her fourth consecutive game since Jan. 10 and ninth game this winter in double figures. She also led the team in assists, dishing out three. Smith, fellow senior
Elena Pericic, and junior
Daisia Mitchell combined for 15 of App State's 29 rebounds, each grabbing five boards.
Mitchell put the Mountaineers (8-10, 1-7 SBC) on the board with a layup in the paint to tie the score at 2-2 early in the first quarter. Building off a layup from sophomore
Jayden McBride, a jumper from Pericic, and freebies from freshman
Addie Biel and McBride, App State took an 8-2 lead. The Bobcats managed to cut the deficit to one at the close of the period, 8-7. Smith completed a three-point play and sophomore
Feryal Defne Atli made two trips to the hoop to stay ahead, 16-15, midway through the second quarter. As App State faced a drought, the Bobcats went to work, establishing a 28-16 lead to close the half.
Through the second half, Texas State maintained its lead, holding the Mountaineers at bay. Late in the fourth quarter, a surge of layups from Smith, McBride, and senior
Emily Hege narrowed the deficit to nine (56-47), but Texas State managed to seal the win, 63-49.
