Wrestling Caps Back-to-Back Duals With Loss at No. 7 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. — App State Wrestling closed its nonconference dual schedule Friday, falling 39-0 to No. 7 Virginia Tech in a match held in a theater setting at the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech.

The Hokies (6-2) have had ranked wrestlers at all 10 weight classes this season, and six of their starters Friday are currently in the top 20 of their weight classes.

The Mountaineers (5-5) were in action for the second straight night, having won 40-4 at home against VMI on Thursday before traveling Friday.

Tomas Brooker had the best chance to post a victory for App State, but Jaden Bullock won an 8-6 decision at 184 pounds.

Avenging a Southern Scuffle loss that occurred when he was ranked 23rd, Bullock recorded the first two takedowns against Brooker, who pulled within two on a takedown with 45 seconds left, then cut Bullock loose. Brooker couldn't finish off another takedown after getting in on a single leg with 20 seconds left.

The dual began at 157 pounds, and Jeremiah Price had a third-period reversal to cut into his deficit against No. 16 Ethen Miller, but Price couldn't complete a turn from on top as Miller won a 6-3 decision.

In a heavyweight showdown, No. 16 Jimmy Mullen won a 12-6 decision against Stephan Monchery, who got in on a shot while behind 8-6 with a minute left in the final period, but Mullen fought it off and got his own takedown to create separation.

At 165, Anthony Conetta dropped a 9-0 major decision to 2025 NCAA qualifier Mac Church, who was at risk of giving up the first takedown late in the second period before turning that sequence into a takedown and four near fall points for an 8-0 lead.

Avenging a December loss in Las Vegas, Virginia Tech's Drew Gorman won by tech fall against Aldo Hernandez at 141, and No. 10 Collin Gaj closed the dual at 149 with a major decision against No. 26 Kaden Keiser in the only ranked showdown of the night. Keiser trailed 4-2 in the final minute but wasn't able to get a go-ahead takedown, instead giving up a takedown and near fall points to Gaj.

The 2025-26 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station.
