BOONE, N.C. – App State soccer conceded an early goal and, despite several quality chances to equalize, was unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to ECU on Senior Day.
App State (3-3) honored seniors
Aleesia Ambrosio,
Shannon Studer and
Reagan Sturgill in a pregame ceremony. All three have been with the program since their freshman season, which was head coach
Aimee Haywood's first in Boone.
Sturgill nearly netted her second career goal, heading in a pinpoint cross from graduate forward
Izzi Wood, but she was called narrowly offside on the play just over a minute before halftime. After video review, officials did not have enough evidence to overturn the call.
Sturgill was involved again in the 60th minute when she delivered a strong cross to
Ellie Garrison in the center of the box, but Garrison's header missed just wide of the far post.
East Carolina (2-2-2) scored in the seventh minute, when Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram crossed a ball into the box and Alyssa Tucker's shot deflected off a Mountaineers defender and trickled across the goal line.
Wood and
Olivia Simon led App State with two shots apiece, while Wood,
Walker Bristow,
Morgan Chapman and
Maddie Williams played all 90 minutes.
The Mountaineers will next take the field Sunday, Sept. 7, when they travel to Farmville, Va., to face Longwood at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
