BOONE, N.C. — Ellie Garrison scored in the fourth minute, and
Kyli Switalski added insurance in the second half as App State defeated Davidson 2-0 on Thursday night in Boone.
The win marked the Mountaineers' (3-0) second straight shutout, and the team has opened the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since 1999.
Switalski's goal was an olímpico — a left-footed corner kick that curled into the far net in the 63rd minute of play that left the redshirt sophomore sprinting towards her bench to embrace her teammates.
"I was just so overwhelmed with excitement," Switalski said of her reaction on the play. The High Point, N.C., native said that she had never before accomplished the feat, not even in practice.
Garrison's goal, which came off an assist from
Izzi Wood, was a five-hole finish between the goalkeeper's legs. The sophomore has now scored in all three matches this season including two goals in the opener against Western Carolina.
App State registered seven shots on target compared to one for Davidson (2-1), despite the Wildcats leading 14-12 in total shots.
Shannon Studer led the Mountaineers with three shots, while Garrison and Switalski each had a pair.
Goalkeeper
Anna Claire Jacobi made one save to earn the clean sheet. App State also controlled possession, holding 63 percent of the ball while generating six corner kicks. App State led for 86 minutes against a Davidson (2-1) team that had not trailed through its first two matches of the season.
App State will travel to William & Mary on Sunday to face the Tribe at noon. The match will be streamed on FloSports.
