Mountaineers’ Rally Comes up Short Against No. 22 Southern Miss

BOONE, N.C. – Trailing by five runs in the fourth, App State baseball cut the deficit to one multiple times but was unable to pull even in a 7-6 loss to No. 22 Southern Miss in the series finale at Smith Stadium.

Behind 5-0, App State (21-22, 11-10) sent eight men to the plate in the fourth inning and scored four times. Tyler Lichtenberger reached on an infield single to begin the inning and stole second base. After a walk to Tyler Figueroa, Riley Luft ripped an RBI single that deflected off the Southern Miss pitcher and into right field. Tanner McCammon followed with an RBI single to left, and later in the inning the Mountaineers scored two more runs on a Southern Miss throwing error, making it a 5-4 ballgame.

After the teams traded runs through the middle innings, App State came to bat in the ninth inning trailing by two. With one out, Kameron Miller lined his tenth home run of the season into the Southern Miss bullpen beyond the right field fence, but the Mountaineers were unable to plate the game-tying run.

Cal Clark impressed out of the bullpen for App State. The right-hander threw 3.1 innings in relief and allowed just a run, allowing the Mountaineer offense to get back into the ballgame. Clark struck out two and did not walk a batter. Reyn Watson followed with a scoreless ninth inning as the pitching staff allowed just one run after the fifth.

At the plate, four Mountaineers finished with multi-hit efforts.

With the win, Southern Miss (31-13, 15-6) completed the sweep, as three home runs in the ballgame helped the Golden Eagles establish and maintain the lead.

App State will play its final midweek game of the season on Tuesday as the team takes on Wake Forest at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C. The 2025 App State baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
