BOONE, N.C. – App State Baseball fell behind early and was held in check at the plate in a 10-1 loss in its series opener against No. 22 Southern Miss on Friday at Smith Stadium.
Reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week JB Middleton impressed for Southern Miss (29-13, 13-6). The right-hander threw his first career complete game, yielding just four hits and a walk while striking out eight.
The Golden Eagles also registered 18 hits in the ballgame, including eight doubles and a pair of home runs.
App State (21-20, 11-8) scored its lone run of the ballgame in the fourth inning.
Joseph Zamora led off the frame with a triple to left field and came into score one batter later, on a sacrifice fly from
Kameron Miller. Zamora tallied two hits and reached base three times in the ballgame.
After
Caleb Cross lasted just 2.2 innings the App State bullpen was a bright spot on Friday.

Cody Little and
Max Tramontana combined to work the final 6.1 innings, allowing four runs while striking out five. The Mountaineers staff finished with ten strikeouts on the night.
Game two of the series on Saturday is set for 3 p.m., while first pitch of Sunday's series finale has been adjusted to 12 p.m. The 2025 App State baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
