Mountaineers Tame Red Wolves in Decisive, 4-1 Victory

JONESBORO, Ark. – The App State tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches with a 4-1 victory over Arkansas State.
 
What Happened
The Mountaineers (11-5, 4-2 SBC) started slow in doubles play but managed to rally, clinching the doubles point. The teams of Savannah Dada-Mascoll/Taya Powell and Ruby Broadbent/Naledi Manyube both faced early deficits of 4-1 on courts one and two, respectively, but staged comebacks to win their matches against the Red Wolves (11-6, 4-2 SBC).
 
Broadbent and Manyube turned the tide, winning five straight points to secure the first doubles match for the Mountaineers. Dada-Mascoll and Powell then followed suit, claiming five of the last eight points to tie their match at six-all. The Mountaineers clinched the doubles point by winning seven of the 10 tie-breaking points, giving them a one-point advantage heading into singles play.
 
In singles, the Mountaineers dropped the first match of the day at the No. 3 position. However, Dada-Mascoll quickly rebounded, securing a hard-fought straight-set win, with the first set decided by an 8-6 tie-break. Manyube followed with a gritty three-set victory after dropping the first set.
 
With the Mountaineers leading 3-1, Olwyn Ryan-Bovey sealed the win with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 straight-set victory from the No. 4 spot. The win pushed her record to 6-5 in singles, and she is currently riding a four-match win streak.
 
Alexi Cleveland and Broadbent's  went unfinished after the Mountaineers secured the fourth point.
 
Up Next
The Mountaineers travel to Monroe, La., to face ULM tomorrow, with play scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
