BOONE, N.C. – The App State tennis team earned its third straight victory, defeating East Carolina, 4-1. Prior to the match, courts one and two, along with the new scoreboard, were dedicated to Keith Richardson, Monica Harris and C. Philip Byers, respectively.
What Happened
The Mountaineers (10-5, 3-2 SBC) started the day at a disadvantage, conceding the doubles point. A 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles by
Savannah Dada-Mascoll and
Taya Powell kept App State in striking distance, but a 6-0 loss at No. 3 tied doubles at one apiece. Despite fighting back from down 3-1,
Naledi Manyube and
Olwyn Ryan-Bovey fell, 7-5, at the No. 1 spot, giving the Pirates (4-9) a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
App State went undefeated in singles, ultimately securing the victory, starting with a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set win by
Alexi Cleveland to even the match at 1-1. Her singles record now stands at 7-3, with today's win marking her third consecutive victory.
Ryan-Bovey followed with another straight-set win, giving the Mountaineers their second point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Her singles record moves to 5-5, along with a 9-5 doubles record.
Ruby Broadbent put App State in striking distance, earning the team's third straight-set singles win of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6. The win marks her fourth singles victory of the season, primarily in positions four through six.
Powell clinched the win for App State at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set victory. It was her second consecutive singles win and her fourth straight win, including doubles.
The matches for Dada-Mascoll and Manyube went unfinished on courts one and two as the Mountaineers secured the win at four points.
Up Next
The Mountaineers hit the road to face Arkansas State and ULM on Saturday and Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
