MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — App State Wrestling traveled north for a three-dual Sunday at the Mountaineer Quad and went 1-2 with a decisive victory against Glenville State sandwiched between losses to a talented Princeton team and 20th-ranked host West Virginia.
West Virginia had ranked wrestlers at six of 10 weights, and App State's four victories in the 31-12 team loss included a pair of ranked individual wins:
Aldo Hernandez by a 4-2 count over No. 29 Jordan Titus at 141 pounds and No. 27
Kaden Keiser by a 7-3 decision over No. 15 Willie Dougald in the next match at 149 pounds.
App State won at eight of 10 weights in the 36-12 victory against ranked Division II program Glenville State and took three matches in a 25-9 loss to Princeton, which got four of its victories from top-20 wrestlers to bounce back from watching a 19-9 lead with two matches remaining against No. 19 Pittsburgh on Friday turn into a 20-19 loss.
Hernandez produced a tiebreaking takedown in the final minute of the third period against Titus, and Keiser took a 3-1 lead on McDougald, a three-time NCAA qualifier, on a takedown midway through the second period. Keiser had a third-period takedown for a 7-2 lead overturned by an officials' review, and a point penalty for stalling cut his lead to 4-3 with 11 seconds left, but he capitalized on an opening created by McDougald's desperate, leaping attempt at a takedown by delivering a takedown of his own in the final seconds.
Anthony Conetta (2-1 decision at 165 pounds) and
Stephan Monchery (6-1 decision at heavyweight) also had their hands raised against WVU as App State (2-3) capped a day of marathon day wrestling that stretched from noon to nearly 6 p.m.
A third-period stalling point was the difference for Conetta against Shawn Taylor in a match with one escape apiece, and Monchery used a tiebreaking takedown (plus two back points) with 23 seconds left to win his match against Brock Kehler. Earlier in the day, Monchery had an overtime win against Princeton.
Wins by
Cooper Foster (pin at 125),
Joe Fongaro (major decision at 141), Keiser (5-1 decision against a returning Division II All-American),
Jeremiah Price (tech fall at 157), Conetta (tech fall),
Colt Campbell (by forfeit at 174),
Alex Hopper (8-1 decision at 184) and
Logan Eller (9-0 major decision at 197) accounted for the wide margin against Glenville State. Foster (true freshman), Fongaro (newcomer from Rutgers), Campbell (true freshman) and Hopper (making his dual debut while wrestling up from 174) all picked up the first dual victories of their App State careers.
Price recorded a tiebreaking takedown with 24 seconds left in a 4-1 decision against Princeton's Rocco Camillaci, and the Mountaineers prevailed in each of the final two matches. Eller posted a 4-0 decision against Conor McCloskey, while Monchery finished off a takedown in the first 30 seconds of the Sudden Victory period to win 5-2 against Sebastian Garibaldi.
The 2025-26 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station. With five duals and two tournaments already completed this season, App State makes its home debut in Varsity Gym next Sunday for the Mountaineer Open.
