WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The App State field hockey team fell to No. 6 Wake Forest 3-0 on Sunday to close out the regular season road slate.
Goalkeeper
Claire Grenis was a bright spot, posting a solid performance in the cage by recording nine saves on 12 shots on goal to limit scoring chances.
How It Happened
1st: It was back and forth early in the game, with the Mountaineers (12-5, 6-2 MAC) holding the ball, just unable to get a clean shot off. Wake Forest (15-2, 7-0 ACC) scored late in the first, to take the 1-0 lead.
2nd: The Mountaineer defense held up in the period, with Grenis tallying two saves. The Demon Deacons earned three corners, but the defense kept them scoreless on those opportunities. Wake Forest scored late in the period, taking a 2-0 lead at the break.
3rd: Grenis tallied two more saves in the period. The Mountaineers tried to rally, earning three consecutive penalty corners, but they were unable to convert, with their lone shot by
Sarah Perkins being saved. Wake Forest scored their third goal late in the third period.
4th: It was scoreless for both teams in the final period. Grenis tallied four saves, and
Sophia Baxter earned a defensive save to keep Wake Forest out of the goal.
