CONWAY, S.C. – Graduate student
Izzi Wood netted her 30th career goal, tying the App State career scoring record, as the Mountaineers played to a 1-1 draw at Coastal Carolina on Thursday at the CCU Soccer Complex.
Wood matched Casey Cleary, who scored 30 goals in 70 games for the Mountaineers from 2005 to 2008.
Wood gave the Mountaineers (5-5-2, 1-2-2) a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Sophomore
Walker Bristow wrestled the ball away from a Chanticleer defender deep in App State's attacking end. Bristow centered a pass for Wood, who returned it to Bristow on a give-and-go. Wood then got the ball right back from Bristow and, on the doorstep, beat the Coastal Carolina goalkeeper with a one-touch finish.
Coastal Carolina equalized on a goal from Eleanor Ashton just 74 seconds later to tie the match 1-1. Ashton and Wood traded braces when the two teams played to a 2-2 draw last year in Boone.
The Chanticleers (3-4-4, 0-1-4) outshot the Mountaineers 18-6 and held a 6-3 edge in shots on target. Wood paced App State with four shots and three on goal in 68 minutes.
Anna Claire Jacobi recorded five saves in goal, while
Maddie Williams and
Sydney Snowden played all 90 minutes on the back line.
App State returns home to face James Madison on Sunday. First touch is set for 1 p.m., and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
