Story Links

ATHENS, Ohio – The App State Field Hockey team defeated the Ohio Bobcats 2-0 on Friday to open Mid-American Conference play 1-0.

The Mountaineers (4-3, 1-0 MAC) never trailed in Friday's matchup, with Charlotte Bosma and Florine Koopman finding the back of the cage.

Claire Grenis posted her third shutout of the season, finishing the game with four saves and no goals allowed. App State sits on top of the MAC in shutouts with three and is the only team in the conference with multiple shutouts on the season.

How it Happened

1st: The Mountaineers dominated the bulk of the offensive possession, tallying four shots on goal in the opening period. Bosma found the back of the cage for the fourth time this year off a Henriette Stegen pass, giving the Mountaineers an early lead in the game. App State forced three saves from Ohio goalkeeper Macy Lotze in the period, going into the second leading 1-0.

2nd: It was a tighter period between the teams, with both squads generating three corners in the period. The Bobcats (3-4, 0-1 MAC) would tally five shots to App State's two, but the Bobcats could not find the back of the cage. Both teams ended the period scoreless, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

3rd: It was an offensive clinic from the Mountaineers in the third, tallying seven shots to Ohio's two. Koopman found the back of the cage for the third time this season off of a corner early in the period, extending the Mountaineer lead to two. App State forced four more saves from Lotze in the period, making it eight saves going into the fourth period. The Mountaineers led the Bobcats 2-0 going into the final period.

4th: It was more of the same for the Mountaineers, tallying five shots to Ohio's zero in the period. The Mountaineer defense held firm to finish out the game, denying entry to the scoring zone for the Bobcats. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth, finishing the game with the Mountaineers defeating the Bobcats to a score of 2-0.
