RALEIGH, N.C. – Led by a clean sheet from
Sarah Wommack in her first career start, App State Soccer opened the season by posting a scoreless draw on the road against NC State.
The App State fan base traveled well, belting out the familiar App State chant at the conclusion of the match at Dail Soccer Field.
The draw against the Wolfpack was the Mountaineers' best result against a power program since defeating Maryland 2-1 in 2016.
Izzi Wood led the Mountaineers offensively, accounting for three of the team's eight shots, including a free kick in the closing minutes of regulation which sailed just wide of the near post.
Freshmen
Ellie Garrison and
Sydney Snowden, as well as Wommack, a redshirt freshman, earned the start in their first career match, while
Kyli Switalski and
Walker Bristow also made their Mountaineer debuts in the match.
Wommack finished the night with four saves, including two splendid efforts – one diving to her right in the first half, and a second half denial that she pushed over the crossbar to foil a Wolfpack counterattack.
The two teams finished with eight shots apiece, while the Mountaineers doubled up the Wolfpack 8-4 in corner kicks.
The Mountaineers will return to Boone where they will host Wofford in their home opener, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m.
