Mountaineers Drop Wednesday Contest to Troy

TROY, Ala. – The App State women's basketball team fell to Troy, 102-69, in its penultimate road game of the season.

With one game left in the Mountaineers' regular season slate, App State (15-14, 8-9 SBC) is projected to finish no lower than ninth in the Sun Belt. The No. 5 – No. 10 seeds will open play in the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament on Wednesday, March 6 in Pensacola, Fla.

Sophomore Alexis Black led the Mountaineers with 16 points as well as four of the Black and Gold's eight treys. Junior Emily Carver netted 15 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. She also contributed two treys and dished out three assists. Fellow junior Zada Porter dished out a team-high four assists and was one of four Mountaineers to pull down six rebounds. 
 
Black and fellow sophomore Rylan Moffitt combined for nine of the Mountaineers' 11 points in the first quarter. The Trojans (18-10, 14-3 SBC), who were ranked 23rd in this week's CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top-25, took control of the game early with a 9-0 run and built momentum to end the quarter ahead, 24-11. Despite a 17-0 Troy scoring run in the second quarter, Black got to the hoop for a layup, which she followed up with back-to-back treys. Black accounted for 11 points in the second period and all four of the Mountaineers' treys in the first half. Senior Faith Alston, junior J'Mani Ingram and Porter combined for six points in the second quarter, but Troy pulled ahead 53-28 to end the half.
 
In the third quarter, Carver netted 12 of the Mountaineers' 19 points and knocked down both of the Black and Gold's treys in the period. Carver also pulled down four rebounds and dished out two assists, while Moffitt netted five points.
 
In the fourth quarter, App State scored 22 points compared to Troy's 24. Porter opened the period with a three-point play. Midway through the quarter, the Mountaineers went on a 9-0 run, their biggest of the night, as Ingram and freshman MaKenzie Drout made it to the hoop for layups and Alston knocked down a trey and made it back to the hoop for a layup. Late in the quarter, sophomore Chaé Harris completed a 3-point play, sank a 3-point bucket, and drove in for a layup to net eight points within the span of 56 seconds. Troy sank the last two field goals to take the game 102-69.
 
UP NEXT
The Black and Gold will close out the regular season on Friday with a 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET) game against Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
