App State Rolls Past ETSU in Non-Conference Finale

Story Links

BOONE, N.C. – App State batted around in two separate innings Tuesday night at Smith Stadium, riding the explosive offensive output to a 14-6 victory over ETSU, to split the season series with the Bucs.

The Mountaineers (22-19, 11-9) jumped on the scoreboard for the first time in the second inning. With one out, Dylan Rogers singled up the middle and Alex Reed followed with a walk. Alex Aguila then laced a two-run double down the line in left field to put App State on the board. Later in the inning with two outs, the Mountaineers saw six consecutive batters reach base, helped by a Buccaneers' error that extended the frame. Ultimately, the Mountaineers sent 12 men to the plate and scored six times.

Seth Whitley (win, 1-0) made his first start of the season and tossed two scoreless innings without giving up a hit. Whitley allowed just a hit batter and an error, but stranded both in the second. He also picked up a strikeout.

Jeriah Henry tossed a scoreless fourth inning for the Mountaineers, and has not given up a run in three of his four outings this season. Ryan Sleeper fired a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, retiring all six batters he faced.

After the Bucs trimmed the lead to 6-5 in the fifth inning, App State got right back to it at the plate. After Rogers hit his fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning, App State batted around again in the seventh, scoring five runs, all with two outs. Xavier Moronta, Hayden Cross, and Rogers all came through with RBI singles in the inning, while Golston Gillespie added a two-run double. Cross has now reached base in 30 straight games.

App State finished the contest going 7-for-15 (.467) with two outs, and scored nine of their 14 runs with two outs in an inning.

CJ Boyd delivered the final blow, in the bottom of the eighth inning, cranking a 450-foot moonshot over the wall in left field to score Andrew Terrell, who walked one batter prior. The Mountaineers have now hit 42 home runs this season, their most since 2012.

Rogers led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two walks, and reached base all five times up. Boyd and Moronta also tallied two-hit games.

App State returns to action this weekend when they head to Conway to face off with No. 8 Coastal Carolina. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m. with game two on Saturday slated for 2 p.m. The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
