RADFORD, Va. – After a marathon of a tennis match Friday against Marshall, App State made quick work of a nonconference road match Sunday at Radford, winning 5-0 to push the Mountaineers' win streak to five.
App State (12-6) will take its hot streak into Saturday's regular-season finale at Sun Belt leader Old Dominion to determine final seeding ahead of the conference tournament. At 8-2, the Mountaineers have their best league record since 2019 and are third in the standings. ODU is atop the standings at 9-0. The Mountaineers and Monarchs boast the league's longest current win streaks at five and nine, respectively.
The Mountaineers quickly won the doubles point Sunday with victories at all three courts. On court three,
Olwyn Ryan-Bovey and
Helena Jansen won 6-1. On court two,
Maggie Pate and
Virginia Poggi teamed up for a 6-2 win. On court one,
Ellie Murphy and
Savannah Dada-Mascoll won 6-3.
The match was called after four quick singles wins by the Mountaineers. Jansen was perfect at 6-0, 6-0 on court one. Poggi claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win on court four. Ryan-Bovey was victorious 6-1, 6-0 on court five, and
Brooke Gruber won 6-1, 6-2 on court six.
On courts two and three, Dada-Mascoll and Pate had both won their first set before play concluded.
"Today was a really solid team performance all around," head coach
Ashleigh Antal said. "I was happy with our decision making and focus from start to finish. It's great to have another win on the weekend leading into a tough ODU team next weekend."
The Sun Belt Tournament will be played April 26-29 (and April 30 if there are weather delays) in Peachtree City, Ga. The top two overall seeds receive a bye into the April 27 quarterfinals. App State could earn the No. 2 seed with a win over ODU and a James Madison loss to Marshall.
