DAVIDSON, N.C. – The App State women's basketball team fell to Davidson, 64-41, on the road on Wednesday. The Mountaineers are now 4-2 (0-0 SBC) on the season as they return to Boone.
Senior
Faith Alston was the Mountaineers' top scorer for the third consecutive game, netting 14 points. Sophomore Chaé Harris also broke double figures, scoring 11 points and made both of the Mountaineers' 3-point buckets on the night. Junior
Zada Porter grabbed a team-high five rebounds in addition to her six points and one steal. Porter and fellow junior
Emily Carver each dished out two assists.
The Mountaineers shot 90% from the charity stripe, with Alston and Porter each sinking 4-of-4 from the line. App State scored 19 points off the bench and seven off fastbreaks.
In the first quarter, App State steadily chipped away at a 6-2 Davidson lead, tying the score at 6-6 after a layup from Harris and a fastbreak jumper in the paint from Alston. Graduate student
Mariah Frazier kept the score tied at 8-8 after getting past the defense for a layup. Harris drained her first 3-point bucket of the night to give App State an 11-10 edge. The Wildcats retook the lead with a jumper, closing out the quarter ahead, 12-11.
Davidson found momentum in the second quarter, taking a 20-13 lead. A layup from junior
J'Mani Ingram and Harris' second 3-point bucket of the night brought App State within two (20-18). The Wildcats jumped ahead 34-20 at the end of the half with a 14-2 run, despite a jumper from Harris.
Alston came out strong in the third quarter, landing a jumper as well as a pair of freebies to cut Davidson's lead to 34-24. Midway through the quarter, Alston made back-to-back jumpers in the paint to chip away at the deficit (39-28). Despite the Mountaineers' efforts, Davidson closed out the third quarter with a 50-32 lead.
Porter accounted for four of the Mountaineers' points early in the fourth quarter. Late in the quarter sophomore
Alexis Black hit a jumper. Black hit another jumper with eight seconds left in the game, but it wasn't enough, as Davidson clinched the win, 64-41.
