Mountaineers Gear Up for Road Clash with Georgia Southern

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team is set to meet with rival Georgia Southern on Saturday in Statesboro, Ga. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. tipoff and will be available to stream on ESPN+. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers are coming off a 73-64 loss to new Sun Belt member and leader of the conference, James Madison on Thursday in Harrisonburg, Va. Sophomore Emily Carver netted a career and team-high 22 points on the evening, which included five 3-pointers. Junior Faith Alston led the Black and Gold in assists, dishing out four, while also scoring the second-most points for the Mountaineers with 15. Redshirt senior Janay Sanders drilled five of six free throws, and redshirt junior A'Lea Gilbert led the team in rebounds, pulling down eight. 
 
Around the Conference
App State ranks fifth in the conference for scoring, averaging 68.4 points per game.
 
In league-play, App State stands third for 3-pointers made, averaging 7.2 per game, and fourth for steals, averaging 9.4 per game. The Mountaineers also check in at fifth in team field goal percentage (.407), and sixth for team 3-point percentage (.319). Individually, Alston ranks sixth in steals, while Carver ranks sixth for 3-pointers per game and eighth for steals. 
 
Last Time Against Georgia Southern
App State last met with Georgia Southern on Feb. 10, 2022, falling to the Eagles 82-80 in overtime in Statesboro, Ga. Sanders netted 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Carver dropped 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Michaela Porter earned a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds on the night. The Mountaineers' game against Georgia Southern scheduled for Jan. 8, 2022 was canceled due to COVID protocol. 
 
Scouting Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern is 11-3 (3-2 SBC) on the season. The Eagles posted three consecutive wins in conference play before Old Dominion snapped the streak on Thursday, edging past Georgia Southern, 84-82. In non-conference action, Georgia Southern recorded a six-game win-streak from Nov. 22 to Dec. 16, which included two triple-digit victories and an overtime win.  
 
The Eagles lead the conference in scoring for the season as well as conference-only play. For the season thus far, Georgia Southern also leads the league in team field goal percentage (.460), 3-point percentage (.356), steals (averaging 12.36 per game), and assists (averaging 18.29 per game). Georgia Southern stands second in team rebounds, averaging 47.9 per game. In conference-only play, Georgia Southern leads the SBC in 3-pointers made, with an average of 8.8 per contest.
 
Terren Ward is the Eagles' top scorer, averaging 18.5 points per game and leads the league for scoring for the season and league play.  Ward also leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.9 per game, while Constance Thomas leads the team in assists, dishing out an average of 3.8 per game. 
 
The Eagles went 18-10 (8-6 SBC) last year. As the No. 7 seed in the Sun Belt tournament, Georgia Southern downed No. 10 seed Georgia State in the first round before falling to No. 2 seed UT Arlington in the quarterfinals. In regular season conference action, the Eagles went on a five-game win-streak from Jan. 29 to Feb. 17, which started and ended with wins over South Alabama. The Eagles also won three non-conference games in triple digits including back-to-back triple digit games over Gardner-Webb and Carver College.

The Mountaineers return to Boone to host Southern Miss for the first time in league play on Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m. before hosting Coastal Carolina on Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. Both games will be available to watch on ESPN+.
