PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas -- Following its second consecutive trip to a national postseason tournament, the App State men's basketball team will travel internationally in preparation for the 2022-23 season.
The Mountaineers will head to Paradise Island, Bahamas, to compete during the second week of August. The team will arrive in the Bahamas on Aug. 8 and stay for six nights at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort.
App State will play in a pair of exhibition games in the Imperial Ballroom in Atlantis. The Imperial Ballroom is the same venue that holds the Battle 4 Atlantis each year, one of the premier tournaments for the nation's best college basketball teams.
Per NCAA Rules each basketball program is allowed to take a foreign tour every four years. App State last went on a foreign tour in 2016 to Italy. This is the first foreign tour under head coach
Dustin Kerns who has led the Mountaineers to 54 wins, an NCAA Tournament Appearance in 2021 and the highest regular season finish in the Sun Belt Conference in 2022. The preseason exhibitions will give Kerns an opportunity to see his team play and learn what he has before the regular season starts in early November.
Kerns said, "We are very excited to have this opportunity to travel to the Bahamas as a basketball family. This trip will give us a chance to grow together as a team and experience the amazing way of life on the islands. This trip will be more than basketball as we will do a free clinic for little kids on the island and learn about the distinct Bahamian culture. We are thankful and appreciative of Chancellor Sheri Everts and Director of Athletics
Doug Gillin for their support for this impactful experience for our student-athletes."
Complete Sports Management helped put the trip together and is excited for the opportunity this presents for the men's basketball program. CSE's Lea Miller-Tooley added, "We're excited to work with Coach Kerns and Appalachian State! This is a great opportunity to visit another country and have an important team bonding experience as they prepare for the upcoming season."
