Softball Unable to Halt Upstate's Home Dominance

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. — App State Softball rallied behind fifth-inning homers from Emma Jones and Mary Pierce Barnes, but a strong USC Upstate team continued its home dominance with a 9-6 victory against the Mountaineers on Tuesday.

The Spartans improved to 13-1 this season (all at home) and 71-5 at home over the last four seasons. App State will take a 7-6 record to this weekend's Bulldog Classic in Athens, Ga.

Jones (2-for-4, two RBIs, two runs) and Emily Parrott (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI, one walk) had multi-hit games from the top of the order. Addie Wray turned the lineup over by going 1-for-2 with one run and two walks, while Baylee Morton accounted for the other RBI.

Taylor Nichols started on the mound for App State, which also threw Kaylie Northrop (one inning) and Kenzi Lyall (final two innings).

Parrott's third-inning RBI tied the game, but the Spartans hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third and added three more runs in the fourth.

Wray's leadoff walk in the fifth preceded Jones' homer to center, and Parrott followed that with a single. She scored on Barnes' two-out homer to left-center.
